WOMAN MANAGER IN THE GREEK PHARMACEUTICAL MARKET

1. What were the necessary skills that got you in this place today?

Many and various circumstances compose my professional path. However, all these circumstances presuppose the ability to recognize the "opportunity", as many people tend to say, or even better the challenge - I believe it's a more appropriate term - on the one hand, and on the other hand the will to effectuate this challenge in applied strategy and with a clearly measurable return.
We meet such challenges only a few times and unfortunately we rarely turn them into advantage, because we don't recognize them. An important part in my professional path was the trust I received from GENESIS Pharma's BoD and mainly from Mr. C. Evripides, who entrusted me with a really important assignment. The required skills or equipment must be formal and, most importantly, substantial. Main skills are knowledge as well as continuous improvement and capability, self-discipline, strategic thinking, steadiness, professional behavior and positive approach.

2. Do you follow any principles or rules in management?

Team work is my basic principle. Each team is assigned with a specific task, following a clear strategy and specific execution procedures. Each team ought to accomplish its mission having utilized the employees involved as much as possible, in order to achieve the maximum return. Team managers coordinate the actions, revise and redefine the practices. Teams interact and inter-support actions since the target is mutual. Individual performance is recognized and fostered, functioning as "paradigm" of professional "self-denial", provided they do not offend the rule of "supererogation". Successful teams are those who possess coherence and flexibility.

3. Do you believe there is a "feminine" style of management?

No, I don't. I don't think "management-function" is the proper approach. I believe in Leadership. Those who have the chance to work with real leaders are lucky, and if they are capable, irrespective of gender, to succeed in "applying leadership". For many, there is always the danger of acting as "commandants" and "wield authority". In this case they get self-entrapped by their gender in order to justify their "style".

4. Is effectiveness related to gender?

Effectiveness is related to human determination and capability. It is related to knowledge and experience. It's related to one's beliefs and values and clearly connected to ambition. Most important though, it is related to each person's overall quality and philosophy. Furthermore, effectiveness is finally signified by how high your targets are set.

5. What are the potentials of women executives in the Greek pharmaceutical market?

Women start with an a priori disadvantage in business perception, which in a comic way is the impending creation of their family. This to me is a great advantage. Successful women must have properly constructed families. In this concept, capable women can be certain for their potentials in the pharmaceutical market, provided they do invest in their profession. However they must be ready to effectively handle the attitude I mentioned above.

6. Have you accomplished and how, the balance between the roles in your personal and professional life?

We all have to realize "in time" that our personal and professional life, are not two different lives between which we have to balance. It's just our life. We have chosen it and ought to live it, but mainly we have to recognize the importance of a steady personal-family environment for a successful career path.
